Philadelphia, PA, Installation Proposal for Eastern State Penitentiary Museum, 2007

"The past is our definition. We may strive, with good reason, to escape it, but we will escape it only by adding something better to it."
- Wendell Berry
We proposed an installation that serves as a temporary escape from the mental and physical confinement of the Museum. A temporary construction consisting of a 3-story triangulated structural frame was proposed in the courtyard space between two radial cellblock structures. Vinyl mesh screen is suspended within each of the frame bays. Visitors must part the screen material to pass through the structure of mesh and steel. The solid temporarily occupies the existing void, providing a confined means to escape from the weight of the museum. The temporary structure serves to remind us that unlike the previous inhabitants, we have the freedom to escape.
